At least 128 journalists were killed worldwide in 2025, according to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). More than half of the deaths occurred in the Middle East.

Anthony Bellanger, the IFJ's general secretary, described the toll as a "global red alert." The IFJ expressed particular concern about the situation in the Palestinian territories, where 56 deaths were recorded.

Journalists were also killed in Yemen, Ukraine (where French photojournalist Anthony Lalykian was killed), Sudan, Peru, and India.

The IFJ denounced the "impunity" of perpetrators of attacks against journalists and expressed concern about the 533 journalists imprisoned worldwide, with over a quarter held in China and Hong Kong.

The IFJ typically publishes higher figures than other organizations, such as Reporters Without Borders (RSF), due to different methodologies.
