EU Divided Over Economic Pressure on Israel

European Union Foreign Ministers appeared deeply divided over exerting economic pressure on Israel due to the war in Gaza. At the meeting in Copenhagen, countries like Ireland, Spain, Sweden, and the Netherlands called for the suspension of the EU-Israel free trade agreement.
Traditional allies of Tel Aviv, such as Germany, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, categorically reject such a move. Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris stated that the EU must impose sanctions on Israel, while EU High Representative, Kaja Kallas, expressed concern about the lack of a unified voice.
The EU is Israel's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade in goods reaching €42.6 billion in 2024. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that Berlin has already suspended the delivery of weapons that could be used in Gaza but expressed skepticism about restricting Israel's access to research funds.
European Commission officials proposed the measure to send a message to Israel, as unanimity is not required for its approval. Support from 15 countries representing 65% of the EU population would be sufficient.
