EU Split Over Economic Pressure on Israel Amid Gaza Conflict

European Union Foreign Ministers are deeply divided over whether to exert economic pressure on Israel regarding the Gaza conflict, as revealed during a meeting in Copenhagen. Some countries are calling for the suspension of the EU-Israel free trade agreement, while others oppose such measures.

Countries like Ireland, Spain, Sweden, and the Netherlands support the suspension, while Germany, Hungary, and the Czech Republic reject it. Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris stated that the EU must impose sanctions on Israel, citing the food crisis in Gaza.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, acknowledged the division and expressed concern about the lack of a unified voice. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that Germany has already suspended the delivery of weapons that could be used in Gaza but questioned the effectiveness of restricting Israel's access to research funds.

European Commission officials proposed the measure to send a message to Israel, as it does not require unanimity for approval. EU-Israel bilateral trade in goods reached €42.6 billion in 2024.
