Hannibal Gaddafi Released After 10 Years of Detention

Hannibal Gaddafi, son of the former Libyan leader, has been released in Lebanon after 10 years of detention without trial. His detention was linked to the disappearance of Shiite cleric Musa al-Sadr.
Muammar Gaddafi was killed in 2011. In 2015, Hannibal was kidnapped in Syria and transferred to Lebanon, where he was detained. He was accused of concealing information about the disappearance of Imam Musa al-Sadr in 1978.
Human rights organizations had denounced his detention conditions. In 2023, he went on a hunger strike. Lebanese judicial authorities ordered his release on bail, which was eventually reduced to $900,000.
The Tripoli government welcomed the release and expressed its desire to restore diplomatic relations.
