Switzerland: Military Chief Says Country Can't Defend Itself in a Full-Scale Attack

The Chief of the Swiss Armed Forces stated that the country cannot defend itself in a full-scale attack and needs increased military spending due to growing risks from Russia.

The country is prepared for attacks by "non-state actors" targeting critical infrastructure and for cyberattacks, but the army faces significant equipment gaps, according to Thomas Süssli.

Switzerland is increasing its defense spending and modernizing its equipment, including artillery and ground systems, while replacing its fighter jets with Lockheed Martin F-35As. However, there are financial overruns and questions regarding the necessity of these expenses.

Süssli attributed the lack of change in public opinion regarding the Armed Forces, despite the war in Ukraine, to Switzerland's distance from the conflict and the misconception that neutrality provides protection.

Switzerland has committed to gradually increasing defense spending to approximately 1% of GDP by 2032.
