Tensions rose at the Republican People's Party (CHP) headquarters in Istanbul, Turkey, with clashes erupting between police and party supporters, including members of parliament. Police used pepper spray.

The demonstrators were protesting a court order to replace a senior party official. A court had removed the head of the party's local organization, citing irregularities in the 2023 elections.

CHP leader Özgür Özel called the court's decision 'invalid.' Meanwhile, Gürsel Tekin, the appointed replacement, arrived at the headquarters to assume his duties.

The CHP alleges political persecution against its members, including Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

Police cordoned off the area around the CHP headquarters, prompting the party to call for demonstrations. Access to social media was restricted in Turkey.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that failure to comply with the court's decision constitutes obstruction of justice.
