Europe Surpasses US in Military Aid to Ukraine

European countries have now surpassed the US in providing military aid to Ukraine, according to the Kiel Institute. From the start of the war until the end of June, Europe has allocated €80.5 billion, compared to €64.6 billion from the US.
Total European military aid exceeded US aid in the spring of 2024, for the first time since June 2022. Contracts signed by Europeans with the defense industry exceed US orders, marking a shift towards industrial production, according to Taro Nishikawa of the Kiel Institute.
In May and June, Europe allocated €10.5 billion in military aid. Germany allocated €5 billion, Norway €1.5 billion, and Belgium €1.2 billion. The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Denmark each allocated between €500 and €600 million.
At least €4.6 billion of European military aid, 44% of the total for May and June, is in the form of supply contracts, mainly with defense companies based in Europe.
Meanwhile, the US approved large arms exports to Ukraine in May, but not in the form of military aid, as Kyiv is required to finance them on its own. US Vice President J. D. Vance stated that the US is done funding the war in Ukraine.
