European leaders have emphasized that resolving the conflict in Ukraine requires Kyiv's involvement, ahead of the US-Russia summit on August 15 in Alaska.

In a joint statement, the leaders underscored the need for active diplomacy, continued military and economic support for Ukraine, and pressure on Russia. They welcomed the efforts of US President Donald Trump to end the war and stated their readiness to support them diplomatically, while maintaining sanctions against Russia.

The statement stresses that Ukraine has the freedom to choose its future and that meaningful negotiations can only begin with a ceasefire or a reduction in hostilities. The leaders condemned Russia's invasion and assured their unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The announcement is co-signed by Emmanuel Macron, Giorgia Meloni, Friedrich Merz, Donald Tusk, Kir Starmer, Ursula von der Leyen, and Alex Stubb.

According to NBC News, the possibility of inviting Volodymyr Zelensky to the Alaska summit is being considered.
