Fidan: Turkey Considers Nuclear Option Amid Iran Concerns
Share on:

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Ankara would consider joining the race for nuclear weapons due to concerns about Iran's ambitions.

In an interview with CNN Turk, Fidan mentioned that doubts regarding the U.S.'s security commitments to its allies could lead to a nuclear arms race in Asia and Europe.

Turkey, according to Fidan, does not wish to disrupt the balance of power in the region, but may need to participate in the nuclear race. He also accused Israel of possessing a nuclear arsenal.

Fidan described the development of nuclear weapons as a 'high-level strategic issue.' Turkey, a member of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, is constructing the first of three nuclear power plants for energy production and hosts American nuclear weapons at Incirlik Air Base.

Referring to the U.S.-Iran talks in Oman, Fidan stated that airstrikes would not bring about regime change in Iran.
