Germany: «The basic principles of policy towards Israel remain unchanged»

The head of the Chancellor's Office, Torsten Frei, assured that the basic principles of German policy towards Israel remain unchanged. The statement comes in response to criticism regarding the decision to restrict arms exports to Israel.
Mr. Frei explained that Germany continues to support Israel in defending its existence and security. The suspension of exports concerns equipment systems that may be used in the Gaza Strip.
Members of the Christian Union (CDU/CSU) expressed objections to the decision, while Roderich Kiesewetter (CDU) warned of a loss of credibility for Germany. The reaction of the President of the Central Jewish Council, Josef Schuster, was also strong, calling the decision "disappointing".
