Guterres Urges No Bombing of Civilian Infrastructure in Iran
Share on:

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the US and Israel to refrain from bombing civilian infrastructure in Iran, such as power plants. He warned that such strikes would violate international law.

Guterres' spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, stressed that even if civilian infrastructure were considered a military target, international humanitarian law prohibits attacks that would cause disproportionate harm to civilians.

Dujarric added that it is "urgent" to end the war through peaceful resolution of international disputes.

This statement comes as US President Donald Trump threatens to destroy Iranian infrastructure if Tehran does not comply with the ultimatum. Mr. Trump stated that the US armed forces could carry out a "complete demolition" of infrastructure within 4 hours.

The deadline given by Mr. Trump for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz expired at 03:00 on Wednesday (Greek time).
