The United States is accused of destroying $10 million worth of contraceptives intended for family planning in poor countries. Aid organizations denounce ideological reasons, as the US refused to sell the contraceptives to the UN.

The contraceptives, funded by USAID, are stored in a warehouse in Belgium. The decision to destroy them is linked to Donald Trump's policy on abortions.

Belgium tried to prevent the destruction, but no viable solution was found. The US government will spend $160,000 to incinerate the supplies in France.

MSI Reproductive Choices offered to repackage and ship the contraceptives, but the offer was rejected. UNFPA, a UN agency, also offered to buy the contraceptives, but negotiations broke down.

The Trump administration is reportedly acting in accordance with the Mexico City policy, which prohibits cooperation with organizations that provide access to abortions.

The destruction includes contraceptive implants, pills, and intrauterine devices, which are due to expire between April 2027 and September 2031.
