US Apologizes for Detention of Korean Workers – Assurances of No Consequences
The United States has expressed its regret for the operation by U.S. immigration authorities and the detention of at least 300 South Korean workers at a factory in Georgia.
According to Seoul, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau stated in a meeting with his South Korean counterpart Park Yun-joo on September 14th that he hopes the event will not affect bilateral relations.
Landau also referred to President Donald Trump's decision that workers from South Korea will not face any consequences when they return to the U.S.
In early September, U.S. authorities raided a Hyundai and LG Energy Solution (LGES) battery factory under construction in Georgia, causing a crisis in relations between the two countries. The workers returned to their homeland on September 12th after a week in detention.
The Georgia facility is considered a major investment and boost to the economy, according to Governor Brian Kemp.
