US: Bill for 5-Year Arms Embargo Lift to Cyprus
Share on:

A bipartisan bill proposing to extend the lifting of the arms embargo on the Republic of Cyprus from one to five years has been submitted by Senator Cory Booker and Senator Jerry Moran to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The aim is to ensure greater stability in military cooperation between the United States and Cyprus, without annual renewal. The committee vote is scheduled for today.

Representative Chris Pappas has included a similar provision in the State Department Reauthorization Act. For the embargo lift to proceed, the bill must either be approved independently or incorporated as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

The bill amends Section 205 of the EastMed Act of 2019 and Section 1250A of the NDAA of 2020, replacing "one fiscal year" with "five fiscal years," eliminating the annual re-approval by the State Department.
