Iraq: Nouri al-Maliki Insists Despite Trump's Threats

Nouri al-Maliki, despite threats from Donald Trump to end US support, is insisting on his candidacy for the presidency of Iraq. Al-Maliki, who is considered close to Tehran, stated that he would only withdraw if the alliance supporting him requested it, warning that such a move would jeopardize Iraq's national sovereignty.
Al-Maliki, a former Prime Minister of Iraq, was forced to resign from office in 2014 under pressure from Washington. The US has significant influence in Iraqi politics since the 2003 invasion.
The vote to elect a president has been postponed to Sunday. The elected president will have 15 days to appoint a new prime minister.
