The United States, potentially with an international coalition, will protect ships in the Strait of Hormuz when it becomes militarily feasible, according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Besent, speaking on Sky News.

Besent stated that protecting ships is a 'prospect' once the US manages to control the airspace. He added that the US Navy would escort ships passing through the critical sea lane.

The Strait of Hormuz holds strategic importance for the global economy, as approximately 25% of the world's seaborne oil supply passes through it. Iran controls the northern coastline of the Strait, giving it a geographical advantage.

Iranian forces can deploy missiles from the coast or fast attack craft with immediate warning, while US and allied forces operate from a greater distance.
