According to a report by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Iran has executed over 1,000 people in the first nine months of 2025.

Hengaw reports that 404 of the executions took place before the start of the war between Iran and Israel in June. This number represents a 40% increase since the start of the war, "marking the highest increase in the last two decades," the statement said.

By the end of August, the United Nations had already recorded 841 executions since the beginning of the year, indicating a sharp increase compared to previous years. According to UN data, there were at least 975 executions in Iran in 2024, and the number of executions for 2025 could reach the highest level in decades.

Human rights organizations have criticized Iran's widespread use of the death penalty, accusing authorities of using executions to intimidate dissidents.

In June, Israel and Iran were involved in a 12-day war, during which, according to reports, Israeli and American forces bombed Iranian nuclear and military facilities. At least eight men accused of espionage have been executed in Iran since then, according to activists.
