Iranian Media: US Accepts 'Red Line' on Uranium Enrichment
Share on:

American officials have accepted Iran's 'red line' to continue uranium enrichment, according to the semi-official Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA), citing an Iranian diplomat familiar with the talks.

According to ISNA, the possibility of a complete halt to enrichment was rejected during recent negotiations with the United States in Geneva. Instead, talks are focusing on technical aspects of the Iranian nuclear program, such as the location, level, and number of uranium centrifuges.

As Bloomberg reports, the anonymous diplomat's statements are in line with those made on Friday by Iranian Foreign Minister and chief negotiator Abbas Araghchi, who stated that the US has not demanded 'zero enrichment' and that both sides are seeking a 'quick agreement'.

US and Iranian officials met again in Geneva on Tuesday, in the second round of talks mediated by Oman, while US President Donald Trump is simultaneously reinforcing the US military presence in the Middle East. Trump said he is considering a limited strike against Iran, having set a deadline in early next month to reach an agreement and avert a possible US attack.

The Iranian diplomat also reportedly stated that a regional arrangement for uranium enrichment is not currently being discussed and rejected speculation that Tehran would agree to transfer nuclear material abroad.

Both sides spoke of progress after the last meeting, but no date has been set for a third round of talks. Araghchi said the discussions led to a general understanding and could move towards drafting an agreement.
