Bolsonaro Sentenced: 27 Years in Prison for Coup Attempt

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for attempting a coup. The Federal Supreme Court found him guilty by a vote of 4-1.
Bolsonaro was convicted for his role as the head of a "criminal organization" that tried to remain in power after his defeat by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022. The indictment included allegations of a plot to assassinate Lula.
Bolsonaro's son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, stated that his father is "holding his head high" despite the "persecution." U.S. Senator Marco Rubio threatened retaliation for the "unjust" conviction, while Brazilian diplomacy responded that it would not be "intimidated."
The conviction sparked reactions, with Bolsonaro supporters gathering in prayer outside the former president's home. Donald Trump criticized the conviction, imposing additional 50% tariffs on Brazilian products.
Lula, meanwhile, appears strengthened and has stated his intention to seek a new term.
