Colombia: $1.7 Billion Program to Acquire Drone 'Shield'

The Colombian government announced the launch of a $1.68 billion arms program to acquire a 'shield' against drones. The aim is to protect security forces from unmanned aerial vehicles used by armed groups.

Colombia has been embroiled in a civil conflict for over six decades, involving the army, police, far-left guerrillas, right-wing paramilitary groups, and drug cartels. Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Colombia is initiating a 'bold strategy' for national security.

The first phase of the plan has a budget of $271.1 million. Between 2024 and 2025, 264 drone attacks were recorded, mainly in areas with coca crops. The attacks were attributed to the National Liberation Army (ELN) and FARC dissidents. From 2024 to 2025, 15 soldiers were killed and 153 wounded.

In November, Colombia signed a €3.1 billion contract with Saab to acquire 17 Gripen fighter jets.
