US-Iran Nuclear Talks: Tehran Proposes Uranium Enrichment Freeze
Share on:

Indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran are underway in Geneva regarding Tehran's nuclear program. Iranian officials are proposing a temporary freeze on uranium enrichment.

According to Reuters, a senior Iranian official stated that an agreement is possible if Washington focuses on nuclear issues. The talks are taking place against the backdrop of increased US military presence in the region.

Tehran insists on the recognition of its right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and the lifting of sanctions. An Iranian official told Al Jazeera that uranium enrichment is Iran's sovereign right, but suggested a temporary suspension.

Tehran rejects discussions about its ballistic missile systems and the principle of a complete and permanent cessation of enrichment. The proposal includes reducing uranium stockpiles under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The US wants to link the talks to Iran's ballistic missile arsenal and its support for armed groups. Oman is playing a mediating role.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called Iran's refusal to discuss its ballistic program a major problem.
