Marwan Barghouti: Ben Gvir Threatens 'Palestinian Mandela' in Prison

Marwan Barghouti, a prominent Palestinian political prisoner, has been threatened by Israel's far-right National Security Minister, Ben Gvir, in his prison cell. Barghouti has been imprisoned since 2002 and is considered a symbol of Palestinian resistance, often referred to as the 'Palestinian Mandela'.
Ben Gvir stated that he would 'eliminate' anyone who harms the people of Israel. Barghouti's family has expressed fears for his life, with his son, Kasem, reporting ongoing threats and attacks against him in the past two years. His wife, Fawda, stated that Barghouti is enduring hardships in Israeli prisons.
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned Ben Gvir's visit as an 'unprecedented provocation', while senior Hamas official Izzat al-Risheq stated that the move only brings shame to Israel. Israeli media reported that Ben Gvir visited the prison to inspect the conditions of the prisoners.
Barghouti has been sentenced to life in prison for attacks but refuses to recognize the legitimacy of the court. He is considered a unifying figure, and polls suggest he would be a sure winner in Palestinian elections. Efforts have been made to release him as part of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, mediated by Egypt and Qatar.
Awni Almasni, a former Fatah candidate, stated that Ben Gvir is insulting the Palestinian people with his actions, but Barghouti remains steadfast. Rights groups have reported an increase in arrests and mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners.
