Breton: US Sanctions on Internet Regulation a 'Wind of McCarthyism'

Former European Commissioner Thierry Breton has denounced the sanctions imposed by the US on him and four other individuals in Europe, calling them a 'wind of McCarthyism'.
The sanctions were imposed due to stricter regulation of digital services. Breton responded via X, referring to the anti-communist witch hunt led by Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s.
Breton reminded that 90% of the European Parliament and the 27 member states unanimously voted for the DSA (Digital Services Act).
In addition to Breton, sanctions were also imposed on NGO executives fighting against disinformation and hate speech online, including Imran Ahmed, Clare Melford, Anna-Lena von Hodenberg, and Josefine Ballon.
