Nagasaki: Atomic Bomb Anniversary Marked 80 Years Later

A minute's silence was observed in Nagasaki on the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing. At 11:02 AM, the time of the explosion, the city church's bell tower rang again, for the first time in eighty years.
On August 9, 1945, Nagasaki suffered the horror of the nuclear bombing, three days after Hiroshima. Approximately 74,000 people lost their lives, in addition to the 140,000 deaths in Hiroshima.
Mayor Shiro Suzuki called for an end to armed conflicts. International participation in the ceremony was significant, including Russia and Israel.
The cathedral's bell, destroyed by the atomic bomb, was restored by American Christians and reinstalled. Priest Kenichi Yamamura emphasized the importance of recognizing past traumas and working together for peace.
James Nolan, a professor from the USA, raised donations for the restoration of the bell, highlighting the history of Nagasaki's Christians.
The bombings led to Japan's surrender and the end of World War II, but historians still question the consequences.
