US Considers Full Oil Embargo on Cuba
Share on:

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is considering imposing a full naval embargo on oil imports to Cuba, according to Politico. The aim is to pressure the Havana regime.

Although no decision has been made, Secretary of State Marco Rubio supports such an escalation. Meanwhile, Mexico is considering whether to continue sending oil to Cuba, fearing retaliation from the U.S.

The blockade of tankers in Venezuela in December resulted in the cessation of oil shipments to Cuba, leaving Mexico as the largest supplier. Donald Trump claimed that Cuba is “ready to fall” and that no more oil or money will be sent.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum states that her country will continue shipments, but high-ranking sources say this policy is under review. Mexico is trying to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (USMCA).

The Cuban government did not respond to the request for comment. Government sources in Mexico believe that stopping the supply to Cuba will cause a humanitarian disaster and mass migration.

Last year, Mexico sent 17,200 barrels of crude oil per day and 2,000 barrels of petroleum products to Cuba.
