UN Urges Israel to Reconsider Settlement Plan Dividing West Bank

The UN has urged Israel to reconsider its decision to proceed with the construction of a settlement that would bisect the West Bank and separate it from East Jerusalem. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric stated that this would end prospects for a two-state solution.

The plan, known as E1, had been frozen since 2012 due to disagreements from the United States and other powers, who considered it a threat to any future agreement with the Palestinians.

The United States responded to the announcement by Bezalel Smotrich, emphasizing that a stable West Bank aligns with the Trump administration's goal of peace in the region. A US State Department spokesperson stated that the US remains focused on ending the war in Gaza and ensuring that Hamas never governs the territory again.
