EU Extends Sanctions Against Iran Until April 2027

The Council of the European Union has extended sanctions against Iran until April 13, 2027, in response to serious human rights violations.

The measures include travel bans, asset freezes, and a ban on exports to Iran of equipment that could be used for internal repression and telecommunications monitoring. It also prohibits the provision of funds to listed individuals and entities.

The updated list includes 262 individuals and 53 entities. The EU first established a sanctions regime for Iran in 2011, which is renewed annually. Since 2022, the EU has strengthened measures due to concerns about the human rights situation.

On January 9, 2026, the High Representative of the EU condemned the use of force against protesters and called for the immediate release of those detained for exercising fundamental rights.

The EU supports the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Iran.
