William Webster, Former FBI and CIA Director, Dies

William Webster, the only person to have headed both the FBI and the CIA, has died at the age of 101. He is credited with restoring confidence in the two agencies after scandals.
He was appointed director of the FBI in 1978, following a period of scandals. He oversaw the Abscam operation, a corruption investigation that led to the conviction of a senator and members of the House. He was then appointed head of the CIA by Ronald Reagan to address the Iran-Contra scandal.
Webster strengthened the oversight of covert operations and improved cooperation between the FBI and CIA.
Prior to his tenure at the FBI and CIA, he served as a federal judge and prosecutor.
