Putin Sees a “Path to Success” in Continuing the War in Ukraine

Despite heavy losses, Vladimir Putin appears to view continuing the war in Ukraine as a viable strategy. Although Russia is suffering significant manpower losses, the Russian leadership seems to accept these losses as it advances slowly but steadily on the battlefield.
According to reports, Russian attacks are often carried out by small groups of soldiers attempting to infiltrate Ukrainian lines. Casualties are high, with some units losing over 80% of their personnel. Despite the losses, Russia continues to recruit new soldiers, offering significant financial incentives, particularly in disadvantaged regions.
Samuel Bendett, an expert on Russian affairs, notes that many Russians are unaware of the true scale of the losses, while official propaganda emphasizes the need for sacrifice. Putin has stated that death on the battlefield is an act of glory for the common good.
Russia recruits soldiers from various sources, including prisons and homeless shelters, and the participation of soldiers from North Korea has also been reported. Despite the losses, Russia seems able to maintain the recruitment rate and continue the war.
From Putin's perspective, the slow but steady advance is seen as a strategy leading to victory, with the hope that Ukraine will face a political crisis. Consolidating the existing situation on the ground through a ceasefire would be considered a success.
