Russian forces have captured the cities of Mirnohrad and Huliaipole in eastern Ukraine, Moscow announced on Saturday.

The capture comes amid a Russian advance on the front lines, on the eve of a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump.

According to the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin received a report from the Chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov stating that "the cities of Dimitrov (the Russian name for Mirnohrad) and Huliaipole have been liberated."

Mirnohrad is located in the Ukrainian province of Donetsk, and Huliaipole is in the eastern part of the Zaporizhia province.
