Sudan: Thousands Dead, Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The conflict in Sudan has resulted in thousands of deaths and millions displaced. The international community is passively observing the crisis, which threatens the stability of East Africa.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been experiencing a bloody internal conflict between the army (SAF) of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

Over 10 million people have been displaced and over 15,000 killed, according to the UN. The humanitarian crisis has reached genocidal proportions, particularly in Darfur.

The crisis began with the fall of Omar al-Bashir in 2019. The agreement with political forces collapsed in 2021 when the army overthrew the interim government.

Sudan is a crossroads of interests for Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, and Saudi Arabia, which support different sides.

The UN warns that, without a political solution, Sudan could turn into a 'new Somalia'.
