Strait of Hormuz: UN Vote on Navigation Resolution
Share on:

A draft resolution regarding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is being put to a vote today at the UN Security Council. The draft resolution "demands" that Iran immediately cease any attacks against ships.

After several postponements, the UN Security Council is expected to decide on a draft resolution concerning navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The Emirate of Bahrain, with the support of other Gulf countries, initiated negotiations on a draft resolution that would give the UN mandate to any state to use force to guarantee freedom of navigation.

The latest version of the text condemns Iranian attacks against ships and "strongly encourages states" to coordinate their efforts to guarantee the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The draft resolution also "demands" that Iran immediately cease any attacks against ships and any attempt to obstruct freedom of navigation.

The text emphasizes that the Security Council is ready to "consider other measures" against those who undermine freedom of navigation. The vote is scheduled a few hours before Donald Trump's ultimatum to Iran.
