Stubb: New Era for Nuclear Weapons

Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that a 'new era for nuclear weapons' has begun, referring to Donald Trump's statements regarding the potential resumption of nuclear tests by the United States.
Stubb emphasized that the 'logic of deterrence' and the 'concept of strategic stability' are changing. The statements were made in Helsinki.
Donald Trump had caused concern with his announcement of a possible resumption of testing, responding to Vladimir Putin's statements regarding a test of a weapon with nuclear capability.
Russia has conducted tests of nuclear-powered weapons, such as the Poseidon underwater drone and the Bourevestnik cruise missile. No nuclear power has conducted a nuclear test in three decades, except for North Korea.
Trump claimed that Beijing and Moscow are conducting secret nuclear tests, which China denied. Stubb stressed the need to strengthen deterrence and control escalation, given that Finland shares a 1,340 km border with Russia.
Finland joined NATO in 2023, abandoning neutrality after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
