On August 15, 2025, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska. The meeting reportedly discussed security guarantees for Ukraine.

Initially, Trump did not rule out sending American troops to defend Ukraine, but later stated that Ukraine's hopes of joining NATO and regaining Crimea were nonexistent.

Sergey Lavrov emphasized that European proposals to deploy troops to Ukraine are unacceptable to Russia and suggested security guarantees from China, the US, Britain, and France.

According to sources, a plan for territorial concessions from Ukraine in exchange for security guarantees is being promoted. Russia is reportedly demanding Ukraine renounce Donbas, remain neutral, and remove Western troops.

Zelensky has rejected ceding territory and seeks NATO membership. The Alaska talks are seen as the best chance for peace since the start of the war.

Various options for a formal agreement are being considered, including a trilateral Russia-Ukraine-US agreement or a return to the 2022 Istanbul agreements.
