Tehran Angered by EU Sanctions: "Adding Fuel to the Fire"

Iran has reacted strongly to the European Union's decision to impose sanctions on fifteen Iranian officials and six Iranian entities, including the Revolutionary Guards.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the EU of "not working to de-escalate the crisis in the Middle East, but instead adding fuel to the fire." He described the prospect of restoring sanctions and including the Revolutionary Guards in terrorist organizations as "dangerous steps," warning of the consequences of a generalized war.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei dismissed European references to human rights as "pretextual." Officials subject to sanctions include Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and Attorney General Mohammad Movahhedi Azad.
The German ambassador to Tehran, Axel Dittmann, was summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry for statements by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who had stated that the Iranian regime "can only remain in power through brute force."
