Libya: 53 Migrants Dead After Boat Capsizes

At least 53 migrants, including two infants, are dead or missing after a rubber dinghy capsized off the coast of Libya. The boat was carrying 55 people.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that the shipwreck occurred north of Zuwara, Libya, on February 6. Only two Nigerian women were rescued by the Libyan authorities.
According to survivor testimonies, the boat departed from al-Zawiya, Libya, on February 5 and capsized six hours later due to water ingress.
The IOM's Missing Migrants Project reports that over 1,300 migrants went missing in the central Mediterranean in 2025. The latest incident brings the number of dead or missing migrants to 484 for 2026.
