Donald Trump and Gustavo Petro spoke by phone days after the attacks in Venezuela and the abduction of Nicolás Maduro.

President Trump spoke with Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Wednesday, following threats to the South American country, in the wake of the American attacks in Venezuela that led to the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

Trump stated that it was a "great honor" to speak with Petro and appreciated his call. He also mentioned that he looks forward to meeting him in the near future. Arrangements are being made between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the Colombian Foreign Minister for a meeting at the White House in Washington.

The Colombian government confirmed the call, which lasted 35 minutes, and described it as "good and positive."

Trump had warned Colombia, Mexico, and Cuba about potential US intervention after the attacks in Venezuela, calling Petro a "sick man" who manufactures and sells cocaine to the United States.

Petro deployed 30,000 Colombian soldiers along the border with Venezuela.
