Charles Taylor, despite public appearances as a leader of peace, is considered responsible for some of the most horrific crimes in African history. His actions plunged Liberia and Sierra Leone into horror.

The army and armed groups under Taylor's influence are responsible, according to human rights organizations, for approximately 250,000 deaths, as well as hundreds of thousands of rapes, tortures, and mutilations during the civil conflicts in the two countries.
