Venezuela: 17 Political Prisoners Released

At least 17 political prisoners have been released in Venezuela following pressure from the US on the interim government. The releases took place in four prisons near the capital, Caracas.
The NGO Foro Penal confirmed the 17 releases, bringing the total number of people released since January 8 to 367, according to its director, Alfredo Romero. However, over 600 political prisoners remain in detention in the country.
Interim President Delsy RodrĂguez announced plans for a general amnesty, which could lead to the release of more prisoners. Current releases are being carried out on probation.
Venezuelan authorities announced the release of a "large number" of prisoners on January 8, but the opposition and NGOs claim that releases are happening slowly.
