North Korea launched at least two ballistic missiles towards the East Sea (Sea of Japan) today, marking its first weapons test of the year. This follows the capture of the Venezuelan president by the US, an event Pyongyang views as a warning.

South Korea's Defense Ministry reported the launch originated from the outskirts of Pyongyang around 07:50 (local time). The Japanese Defense Ministry also confirmed the launch, with Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi condemning North Korea's actions as a threat to peace and stability.

Analysts believe the test reflects the pressure Pyongyang feels due to the situation in Venezuela. Li Il-kyu, a former political counselor at the North Korean embassy in Cuba, expressed hope that Seoul would learn lessons from the US actions.

South Korea's presidency convened an emergency national security council meeting and called on North Korea to cease provocative actions. The missiles traveled approximately 900 kilometers before falling into the sea.

The test comes hours before South Korean President Lee Jae-myung is scheduled to depart for China, where he will meet with Xi Jinping. Kim Jong Un has intensified efforts to strengthen his country's arsenal, visiting shipyards and ordering increased missile production.
