The President of Turkey, Tayyip Erdoğan, announced that the Atatürk Prize for International Peace will be awarded to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres.

In a speech commemorating the anniversary of the founding of the Turkish state, Erdoğan stated that the award recognizes Guterres' efforts to ensure peace and stability worldwide.

Turkish media note that the Atatürk Prize is rarely awarded. Past recipients include Nelson Mandela, Rauf Denktaş, and Kenan Evren.
