Brazil: Bolsonaro on Trial for Coup Attempt

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is on trial in the country's Supreme Court for an attempted coup following the 2022 elections. He faces charges of conspiracy and disruption of the democratic order, with a potential prison sentence of up to 43 years.

Federal prosecutors allege that Bolsonaro played a central role in the conspiracy to prevent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from taking office. Bolsonaro denies the charges and calls them politically motivated.

Seven close allies of Bolsonaro are also on trial, including Walter Braga Netto and Paulo Sérgio Nogueira. The Supreme Electoral Court has already banned Bolsonaro from running for election until 2030.

An investigation revealed a plot to assassinate Lula and a Supreme Court justice, as well as the instigation of riots on January 8.
