The UK has imposed sanctions on 135 tankers belonging to Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet'. Two Russian companies were also targeted: the shipping company Intershipping Services LLC and the oil trading company Litasco Middle East DMCC.

The tankers are considered critical to Russia's energy and oil sector. The British government claims that the fleet has transported cargo worth $24 billion since the beginning of 2024.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that the sanctions will weaken Vladimir Putin's 'shadow fleet' and reduce Russia's oil revenues.

Intershipping Services LLC allegedly registers ships under the flag of Gabon, allowing them to transport up to $10 billion worth of products annually on behalf of Russia. Sanctions were also imposed on Litasco Middle East DMCC for transporting Russian oil.

The Russian embassy in London did not immediately comment. Moscow has called the Western sanctions illegal.

The European Union also approved the 18th package of sanctions against Russia, including measures targeting the oil and energy industry. The EU and the UK are considering reducing the price cap on crude oil to $47.60 per barrel.
