Tensions at Sinai Monastery: Unprecedented Incidents and Accusations
Tensions are high at the St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai, with heated exchanges at the monastery gate. According to Archbishop Damian, 11 fathers who were expelled from the Monastery attempted to overthrow him, leading him to make a dramatic appeal for protection.
Archbishop Damian, supported by the majority of the monks and Bedouins, called on the 11 monks to respect the rules, and after their refusal, decided to remove them.
One of the 11 monks, Father Michael, alleges their expulsion with violence and the presence of thugs. Greek and Egyptian authorities are monitoring developments, with emphasis on preserving the historical continuity of the Monastery.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not taken a position, considering the matter an internal affair.
