Israel: Automatic Death Penalty for Palestinian Terrorists in West Bank

Israel has approved legislation imposing an automatic death penalty on West Bank Palestinians convicted of terrorism. The law, promoted by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, aims to deter attacks like the October 7th massacre.
Ben-Gvir stated that the law will align Israel with US policies regarding the death penalty. Those arrested in the West Bank for deadly attacks will automatically be sentenced to death, with the possibility of appealing to military courts. The execution will take place within 90 days of the conviction.
The legislation has drawn international condemnation and has been challenged in the Supreme Court, with critics arguing that it creates discrimination and violates human rights. Ben-Gvir dismissed the criticisms, saying that European foreign ministers do not understand the need for the law.
Ben-Gvir also stated that Hamas is concerned about the law and that terrorists in prisons fear the death penalty. He said Israel will deprive terrorists of their lives as well.
