Israel: Knesset Discusses Applying Death Penalty for Terrorists

The Knesset, Israel's parliament, is today discussing a bill proposed by the Minister of Justice that provides for the imposition of the death penalty on those convicted of terrorist acts, despite objections.

The Knesset's National Security Committee had postponed the discussion of the proposal several times, with the most recent, in early September, being decided at the request of the government coordinator for hostages and missing persons.

The Coordinator, also expressing the position of many relatives of hostages, argued that the timing of the discussion could endanger the hostages in Gaza, especially after Israel began its ground operation in Gaza City.
