The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Konstantinos Kombos, advocated for the need for immediate de-escalation and intensive diplomatic action in the Israel-Iran military conflict, during the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) of the European Union (EU) in Brussels.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kombos condemned the terrorist attack of June 22 on the Holy Shrine of Prophet Elias in Damascus, stressing the need for a full investigation by the Syrian authorities and protection of the Christian population.

In his intervention, Mr. Kombos reiterated the proposal for a plan of diplomatic actions by the EU, including the member states, and stressed the importance of the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The High Representative (HR) of the EU presented a report on Gaza, in the context of the revision of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. Mr. Kombos described the situation in Gaza as unacceptable and stressed Israel's obligation to implement International Law and increase humanitarian aid.

Furthermore, he reiterated Cyprus' recognition of the State of Palestine and its readiness to adopt restrictive measures against violent settlers.

During the FAC meeting, the Russian aggression against Ukraine and European security in relation to China were also discussed.
