Lazzarini: Gaza Aid Distribution System a 'Sadistic Death Trap'

The head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees has described the new aid distribution system in the Gaza Strip as a "sadistic death trap." The system has been managed by a non-profit organization since May.
Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, denounced that the so-called Humanitarian Foundation for Gaza (GHF), supported by the US and Israel, distributes food to a small number of heavily guarded distribution centers, resulting in deadly incidents.
Lazzarini stated via X that "snipers are firing indiscriminately at crowds of people," mentioning "reports of over a thousand deaths." The UN insists that since the end of May, hundreds of people have been killed near GHF facilities.
Israeli authorities claim that the distribution mechanism was designed to prevent Hamas from "stealing" humanitarian aid. Critics accuse the Netanyahu government of instrumentalizing humanitarian aid.
Until May, the UN managed approximately 400 aid distribution centers in the Gaza Strip. Few continue to operate.
