Mojtaba Khamenei: New Supreme Leader of Iran

Mojtaba Khamenei has been appointed as the new Supreme Leader of Iran, following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to state media reports.
The selection was made by the Assembly of Experts, an 88-member body of senior clerics. The assembly called on Iranians to demonstrate unity and support for the new leader.
In a statement, the assembly said that Khamenei was chosen after a "decisive vote" and called on elites and intellectuals to pledge allegiance to the leadership.
This marks only the second time the Assembly of Experts has chosen a new Supreme Leader since 1979. The first was after the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
