Syria: Army Warns of New Strikes Against Kurds in Aleppo

The Syrian army has issued a warning to residents of Aleppo about impending strikes on Kurdish positions in Deir Hafer, east of the city. This comes a week after deadly clashes in the area.
The army claims the area is being used as a base for terrorist operations in Aleppo and its surroundings. Meanwhile, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sara issued a decree granting rights to Syrian Kurds and recognizing Kurdish as an official language.
The decree recognizes Kurdish as a 'national language,' establishes Nowruz (Kurdish New Year) as an official holiday, and grants nationality to Kurds and their descendants who were deprived of it after the disputed 1962 census.
The Kurdish minority, marginalized for decades, took advantage of the civil war to seize large areas in northern and northeastern Syria. In March 2025, the Damascus government signed an agreement with the Kurds to integrate their institutions into the Syrian state, but talks on implementation have stalled.
